Events can be exhausting, but with a set amount of time to achieve objectives and goals within, it’s important that every minute is used wisely. Networking is a skill rarely enjoyed, but with the sheer number and variety of people at exhibitions, it’s the best way to meet lots of people and identify new potential deals, contacts or opportunities.
DCE Agency present breath-taking stands and spaces at exhibitions and trade shows worldwide, so we know a thing or two about making the most of the time there. Read on for our top tips on networking!
Choose your events wisely
There are thousands of trade shows spanning every possible industry and sector every year – but only a select few will be worth your while in terms of travel, time and development opportunities. Ensure that events you choose to attend are relevant to your role or development area, have the people and brands present you want to meet, and will deliver ROI on your investment in attending.
Book meetings in advance
Many events will release exhibitor and attendee lists ahead of time – and where this is the done thing, it’s always worth reading through them and reaching out to those you’d like to connect with to book a meeting, coffee or informal chat in advance. Even if you’re not able to get something in the diary, it’s worth letting people know you’ll be there so that they’re aware.
Plan in rest time
You can’t be ‘on’ all the time. Events can be busy and bustling and tiring, and blocking out some time in your schedule each day to allow you to recharge and reflect on your experiences at the event can be hugely beneficial. Take this time to eat, drink, and work out what move you’d like to take next to get the best out of your event experience.
Say hi!
Often just nipping by a stand or meeting to greet someone is the most daunting part of networking, but once the frog has been eaten, the difficult part is out of the way. Even if the conversation doesn’t flourish from that point, the introduction has been made and the person knows who you are and where you’re from.
Take a genuine interest
Corporate events can be competitive places. As a result, it’s not uncommon for networking conversations to descend into comparing results, achievements and experiences – which in truth rarely achieves much productive or strategic. It’s always advisable to ask as many questions as possible and take a genuine interest in the person or people you’re speaking to. This will create a memorable conversation for them as they’ll feel heard and will give more opportunity for genuine connection.
Be seen
If you can, get on stage and speak or present: but if you can’t, ask a question of a speaker! Being seen to be at an event helps elevate profile and allows for others to recognise you and approach you. This doesn’t necessarily mean making a scene or being the loudest voice in the room, but instead being present, being relevant and being professional.
